M`SIA TO INCLUDE EXHIBITORS FROM SERVICE SECTOR IN CAEXPO NEXT YEAR
From Vincent Low
NANNING, OCT 22 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is to expand the size of its
exhibition pavillion in the China Asean Expo (CAEXPO) next year to include
exhibitors from the service sector to capitalise on opportunities from the sector's
liberalisation.
Malaysia Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) chief executive officer
Noharuddin Nordin said that under the China-Asean Free Trade Area (CAFTA), both
China and Asean were liberalising their service sector.
Among them are computers and related services, management consulting services,
construction, environmental and recreational services and transport.
"We've to take advantage of the sector's liberalisation," he told Bernama after
meeting representatives of the Malaysia Furniture Entrepreneurs' Association at
Malaysia's pavillion at CAEXPO.
Matrade has asked CAEXPO organiser for a bigger exhibition area so that the
agency could bring in more companies to the 8th CAEXPO to be held in October
next year.
"In conjunction with Malaysia being the "Country of Honour" for the 8th CAEXPO,
we are to expand our participation. In fact, we always have around 50 per cent
over-subscribed exhibitors wanting to participate in the expo since the 3rd
CAEXPO," he said.
Noharuddin said Matrade had lined up several several programmes for the service
sector for next year's CAEXPO.
"We'll start work on the programmes soon. We'll also work closely with MIDA
(Malaysia Investment Development Authority) to fully utilise this platform
(CAEXPO) to enhance our effort to woo more Chinese investments and promote
tourism," he said.
He said Matrade would gear up its four offices in China to attract potential
investors to the next CAEXPO.
Noharuddin said Malaysian exhibitors had concluded RM2.4 million sales on the
first day of the 7th CAEXPO while negotiations were underway for sales amounting
to RM76.5 million. (US$1=RM3.10)
The sales were mainly from confectioneries, beverages, bird nests,
furnitures, apparels, audio video and jewellery.
Malaysian white coffee and bird nests were the centre of attraction at the
Malaysian pavillion this year.
