VIVA PALESTINA tO SEEKS GRANT FOR AGRICULTURE IN GAZA
SEPANG (Malaysia), Oct 26 (Bernama) -- Viva Palestina Malaysia (VPM) will apply
for a RM2 million (US$645,681) grant from the Gaza Humanitarian Fund through the
Malaysian government to help develop agriculture in northern Gaza.
VPM Medical Aid coordinator Dr Musa Mohd Nordin said the funds would be used to
further develop the farms, hence creating more jobs for the people there,
expecially the men.
"From our observation, we think the Palestinians there will be able to earn the
equivalent of RM800 monthly from growing vegetables like brinjal, cucumber and
tomato, and olive trees." (US$1=RM3.09)
He said this after arriving at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport here at
4.30pm Monday after taking part in a land convoy dubbed Viva Palestina
'International Lifeline for Gaza, with 13 other Malaysian volunteers.
The convoy had travelled through seven countries, namely England, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Syria and Egypt before reaching Gaza on Oct 21.
Musa said the Malaysian volunteers together with 370 others from 30 countries left London on Sept 18 to bring RM16 million worth of medicines, educational materials and other forms of aid to Gaza.
"These included three ambulances valued at RM165,000 and medical supplies worth RM260,000 from Aqsa Syarif Malaysia, while VPM gave humanitarian aid worth RM180,000 and six vans for use by the people of Gaza."
VPM chairman Adnan Mohd Tahir said the organisation would also be
contributing RM30,000 to the cottage industries in Gaza which were mainly carried out by the women.
"We had already given an initial sum of RM15,000 to help boost their economic activities like tailoring, embroidery, and cake, pastry and cookie making, and for a kindergarten there."
Asked about future humanitarian aid convoys, Adnan said VPM would be returning to Gaza next year to provide follow-up assistance to the people of Gaza.
