MARINA MAHATHIR AND TV3 RECEIVES AWARDS FROM UNITED NATIONS

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26 (Bernama) -- Marina Mahathir and Malaysia's local private
television station, TV3, were awarded the United Nations Person of the Year 2010
and the UNICEF International Children's Day of Broadcasting Award for the East
Asia Pacific region for 2010 respectively.

Resident Representative for UNDP, The United Nations Development Programme, and
Resident Coordinator of the UN in Malaysia, Kamal Malhotra, said Marina is a
prominent campaigner for women's rights and she has been at the forefront of
putting HIV and AIDS on the public agenda in Malaysia.

He said that Marina, daughter of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, has
written articles and spoken at national and international conferences on topics
related to gender equality, women's empowerment, cultural diversity,
discrimination against Muslim women and other related issues in Malaysia.

To be eligible for the award, the person or organisatioin must be Malaysian with an outstanding track record of work supporting the country's development in its various dimensions, he told reporters after the 65th Anniversary of the UN celebrations here Monday.

However, Marina was not present to receive the award because she is atttending a Sisters in Islam event in Barcelona, Spain.

Present at the award presentation were Deputy Foreign Minister Senator A. Kohilan Pillay, Ambassadors, High Commissioners and representatives of over 73 diplomatic missions in Malaysia.

TV3 won the broadcasting award in TV category with its documentary
"Terubuk Masin untuk Perdana Menteri" while national broadcasting station,RTM, won in the radio category with its programme Listen Up!
