MALAYSIA-INDIA AGREE ON FRAMEWORK FOR STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP

PUTRAJAYA, Oct 27 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and India Wednesday agreed on a
framework for strategic partnership to strengthen peace and prosperity between
the two countries.

Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh said it was a roadmap to enhance
contacts between the two countries, businesses and people-to-people level based
on the shared values of democracy and multi-culturalism.

"We have agreed to work closely with each other on regional and
international matters of common interest, including on combating terrorism.

"It is a matter of deep satisfaction that we have successfully concluded
negotiations for the comprehensive economic cooperation agreement," he said at a
joint press conference with Prime Minister Najib Razak here.

Manmohan, accompanied by wife, Gursharan Kaur, is on a three-day official
visit to this country, beginning Tuesday.

This is his first bilateral visit to Malaysia and it is to reciprocate
Najib's visit to India in January.

Manmohan said he welcomed a greater investment from Malaysia in their
infrastructure and manufacturing sectors, and their companies similarly looked
forward to do greater business in Malaysia and the Asean region as a whole.

"We have agreed to further enhance exchanges in the field of tourism,
culture, higher education and labour."

He also said the India Malaysia CEO forum formally launched would
encourage businesses and industries in both countries.

Manmohan said his visit to this country reflected the commitment of his
government to work closely with Malaysia and to advance their relations and take
them to greater heights.

"India and Malaysia are two major countries, of which Malaysia is an
influential member of the world community whose voice is heard with great
respect in the global institution," he said.

He said the two countries had discussed regional and international issues of
common interest and shared the view that the regional architecture of
cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region should be inclusive and transparent.

He said that the year 2010 was truly a turning point in the history of
bilateral relations between India and Malaysia.

"The understanding of agreement that we have reached today has established a
solid foundation for the building of a truly strategic partnership and bringing
our two people together for a better future," he said.
