BIOCATALYSIS THE WAY FORWARD FOR PALM OIL, SAYS EXPERT
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 30 (Bernama) -- Biocatalysis is the way forward towards coming
up with better quality palm oil," said an expert in the field.
Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Science Faculty's head of chemistry
department Prof Dr Mohd Basyaruddin Abdul Rahman said the methodology under
controlled conditions was also able to yield more palm oil from the same amount of
raw material and was also applicable for other vegetable-based cooking oils like
corn oil and olive oil.
"For example, under the current technology, a kilogramme of palm oil costs RM3
(US$0.96) to produce but under this new technology, we will be able to produce
100 kilogrammes at just around RM200 (US$64.31)," he told Bernama after
delivering a lecture entitled ure "Haute Couture Molecules and Biocatalysts" at
UPM, Serdang here Friday.
Mohd Basyaruddin said the new technology was environment-friendly because no
harmful substances were used and would be a boon for the commodities industry in
the country.
He said as biocatalysis was at the molecular level, the technology served
multiple purposes whereby it need not only be used for food production but
producing cosmetics and pharmaceuticals as well.
Because of this (molecular level technology), he said the quality of the
products would be much better as compared to the normal processes.
He added that on the whole, the techology added much more value to the industry
because of its cost effectiveness while at the same time yielding better
quality.
