CLINTON'S VISIT TO REFLECT FULL DISPLAY OF FLOURISHING US-M'SIAN TIES
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 30 (Bernama) -- US Secretary of State Hilary Rodham Clinton's
maiden visit to Malaysia next week, will see a full display of the flourishing
relationship between the two countries, said Kurt M. Campbell, the Assistant
Secretary at the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs at the US State
Department.
At a recent briefing in Washington DC on the forthcoming visit, he said it would
enable Clinton to have an opportunity to interact with Prime Minister Mohd Najib
Razak and his key cabinet minister on a range of issues.
"Few countries have come as far, in terms of our bilateral relationship as the
one between the United States and Malaysia," he added.
Campbell said there had been enormous progress on a range of issues between the
United States and Malaysia on the non-proliferation of weapons of mass
destruction, political coordination and strategic dialogue.
Malaysia's relationship with the US has been enhanced significantly since
Najib's initial meeting with US President Barack Obama in April this year.
Najib has been commended by Obama for having initiated legislation against the
proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
The US Government has viewed Malaysia’s economic vibrancy, democracy, and
willingness to cooperate on key security and multilateral issues as having
formed the basis for a strong bilateral partnership.
In her remarks about her current visit to several Asian countries in Hawaii two
days ago, Clinton said that since day one, the Obama Administration knew that
much of the history of the 21st century would be written in Asia.
"This region will see the most transformative economic growth on the planet. Most of its cities will become global centres of commerce and culture," she said, adding that the US Government had also taken a series of steps to build stronger ties with Asean as it viewed the regional grouping as the fulcrum for South East Asia's emerging regional architecture.
The US is Malaysia's third most important trading and business partner with Malaysian exports exceeding US$25 billion annually.
