M'SIA-US COOPERATION ON MEDICINE, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
PUTRAJAYA, Nov 3 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and the United States (US) Tuesday forged
cooperation on medicine, science and technology with the signing of three
Memorandums of Understandings (MOU) in conjunction with the visit by US
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
The MOU on Science and Technology Cooperation was signed by Clinton on behalf of
the US government and Foreign Minister Anifah Aman for Malaysia.
It was witnessed by Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
Also present was former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Later, Muhyiddin and Hillary witnessed the signing of agreement on
collaboration, affiliation and licensing between the Academic Medical Center and the
Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Medicine International.
It was signed by the Executive Chairman of the Academic Medical Centre Dr Mohan
Swami and the Dean of the Medical Faculty and Chief Executive Officer of the
Johns Hopkins, Dr Edward Miller.
The agreement was signed to set up the Perdana University, a RM2 billion
(US$647.773 million) public-private partnership that would position Malaysia as
a prominent and integrated health hub not only in Asia but globally.
It was also in collaboration with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI).
Another MoU was between the Malaysia Airlines and Pratt and Whitney on A330
engine agreement, signed by Malaysia Airlines managing director Tengku Azmil
Zahruddin Raja Abdul Aziz and Pratt and Whitney vice-president Craig William
Welsh.
Clinton is on a three-day official visit to Malaysia beginning Monday, and this
is the first bilateral visit to Malaysia by Clinton since the 1995 visit of
Secretary Warren Christopher.
Earlier, Muhyiddin and Clinton had a delegation meeting at the Prime Minister's
Office, here for about half an hour.
