10 STUDENTS COMMUNICATE WITH NASA ASTRONAUT
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 4 (Bernama) -- Ten secondary school students from around the Klang Valley here were Wednesday able to communicate directly with NASA astronaut Douglas H. Wheelock who is now at the International Space Station, using the amateur or ham radio.
According to the National Space Agency (Angkasa), the direct communication took place for nine minutes beginning at 2.02am.
"According to the plan, 20 students were to commmunicate with the NASA astronaut, but due to radio wave signal interference on Channel 40, only 10 were able to do so," said Angkasa in a statement, here, Wednesday.
Among the questions asked were: "Do you feel day and night in space?", "What time zone do you observe in space?", "Have you seen other planets besides earth?" and "How big is the ISS?".
Besides that, various other activities were held including night sky simulation and a talk by the country's second astronaut, Major Dr Faiz Khaleed.
The direct communication with ISS programme was organised by Angkasa and Astronautic Technology (M) Sdn Bhd, aimed at giving exposure to the participants and creating greater public awareness on science and technology.
