INNOVATION NEEDED TO TRANSFORM TOURISM INDUSTRY
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 4 (Bernama) -- Innovation is the main ingredient to transform the country's tourism industry and optimise its potential in attracting more tourists, Tourism Minister Dr Ng Yen Yen said.
She said such approaches were crucial to position Malaysia as a top tourist destination in the world.
"The ministry will be in the forefront to initiate unconventional approaches and ideas to develop new products and also to re-brand and value add traditional products," she said in her speech at Second World Chinese Economic Forum here, Wednesday.
Referring to the statistics by World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), she said Malaysia's global ranking in terms of tourist arrivals rose to ninth position in 2009 compared to 11th in 2008.
"As for global inbound tourist receipts, Malaysia's ranking also improved from 16th in 2008 to 13th in 2009. This was the first time Malaysia is listed in the UNWTO Top Ten most visited countries," she said.
Ng said the achievement indicated that the tourism industry had indeed grown from strength to strength which could be attributed to the tourism policies and strategies, good regulatory and institutional framework, effective marketing and promotion and successful public-private sector partnership.
