FIRST PRIVATE TEACHING HOSPITAL IN MALAYSIA
PUTRAJAYA, Nov 4 (Bernama) – Perdana University, which offers the first private
teaching hospital with world-class medical facilities will be established in
Selangor, another milestone in Malaysia’s effort to emerge as the hub for
education and health.
Set to open its doors in 2014, the university will be the first to offer
world-class medical school with a medical and life sciences research centre.
The RM2 billion (US$648.929 million) public private partnership backing the
university was formalised on Tuesday, which is to position Malaysia as a
prominent and integrated health hub beyond Asia and globally.
Two agreements, between Academic Medical Centre Sdn Bhd and The Johns Hopkins
University & Johns Hopkins Medicine International [JHI] and another one
formalising the collaboration between Academic Medical Centre Sdn Bhd and Royal
College of Surgeons in Ireland [RCSI], were signed.
Perdana University will function as a strategic platform in healthcare delivery
for not only Malaysians and those in the surrounding regions but for the global
community as well.
The hallmark of this Academic Medical Centre project is medical tourism besides
education, healthcare services and research.
Signing on behalf of Academic Medical Centre Sdn Bhd was Dr Mohan Swami who is
the Executive Chairman while JHI was represented by Dr Edward Miller, Dean of
the Medical Faculty of The Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Medicine
International.
Witnessing the historic moment was Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and
the visiting US Secretary of State Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton who was here
on a three-day official visit from Monday.
A collaboration agreement with the government was signed separately between the
Director General of Public Service Department Abu Bakar Abdullah and Dr Mohan
Swami. This was followed by signing of a collaboration agreement between RCSI
and Academic Medical Centre.
Perdana University is to be built on a 52 hectare site in Serdang. A totally
private-funded initiative by Turiya Berhad and Chase Perdana Sdn Bhd working
closely with the Public Private Partnership Unit (3PU), Perdana University will
include two medical schools, a 600-bed teaching hospital and a state-of-the-art
research centre within a techno park.
The project was specifically mentioned in the 2011 budget presented by Prime
Minister Najib Razak on Oct 15.
The presence of Clinton at the signing ceremony marked a great significance of
the project for the countries involved.
As it is affiliated with world-renowned medical institutions, it is hoped that
Perdana University will attract key opinion leaders, physicians, specialists and
researchers as well as Malaysians currently practicing medicine abroad thus
resulting in a ‘brain gain’ for Malaysia.
“In the meantime, an interim campus housing the two medical schools will operate
out of a standalone building in Kuala Lumpur. The medical school will offer for
the first time in Malaysia, a four-year graduate programme based on a US
curriculum in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins University School of
Medicine.
"The second school, meanwhile will offer the more conventional five-year
graduate programme based on an Irish curriculum in collaboration with the Royal
College of Surgeons in Ireland. The Dean Designates have already been appointed
and will commence work on 1 January 2011, well before the first intake of
students slated for September next year,” said Dr Mohan Swami in a statement.
Perdana University’s Life Sciences Research Centre meanwhile will be affiliated
with Johns Hopkins Research Centre and will not only enable local students to
acquire the necessary skills of research early in their career but place
Malaysia in the global research community.
Once the centre is fully operational, its services will complement that of other Medical and Biotechnology Research Centre in Malaysia. Plans are also underway to establish a Centre of Excellence for diseases prevalent in this region such as heart diseases, cancer, cerebrovascular diseases, diabetes and tropical diseases among others.
The 600 bed Teaching Hospital on the other hand will be affiliated with Johns Hopkins Medicine International and will be the first private teaching hospital in Malaysia. It will cater to patients both locally and from abroad thereby helping to promote Medical Tourism for the country.
The RM2 billion Perdana University is the result of an invitation by the Minister of Higher Education to Academic Medical Centre Sdn Bhd to establish and develop the private university in Malaysia.
The university will in future undertake to offer medical post-graduate programme and will also set-up a post-graduate School of Nursing, Allied Health and other courses.
