FRENCH SPIDERMAN ALAIN ROBERT CLIMBS WORLD’S LARGEST FERRIS WHEEL
SINGAPORE, Nov 6 (Bernama) – French ‘Spiderman’ Alain Robert added another
feather to his cap today when he created history by climbing the Singapore
Flyer, the city-state’s world’s largest observation wheel by the Marina Bay
here.
The 48-year-old Frenchman took less than 40 minutes to complete the climb on the
whole loop of the 42-storey high Singapore’s iconic ferris wheel, watched by
curious onlookers and the international media.
Robert, who became famous from scaling skyscrapers in many cities around the
globe without permission from the building authorities, was elated with the
climb which went off smoothly.
For Friday’s climb, Robert was given permission by the Singapore authority, but
with one condition, that he must use a safety harness when doing the climb.
Speaking to the media after the successful climb, Robert said the climb on the ferris wheel was not a risk at all to him because he had safety harnesses on, except for the wet wheel due to the drizzle in the evening.
Robert said he considered climbing Malaysia’s Petronas twin towers (in 2009) was more challenging and dangerous because he did not have any safety devices on then.
On Friday’s climb, he said it was totally a new experience as this was the first time that he was not climbing a building, and the view of the city’s skyline from atop the wheel was amazing and striking.
On his future, Robert, who had been arrested in 12 different countries for illegal climbs, said he had plans to climb more skyscrapers around Europe, China and the United States, but with their permission.
He said negotiations were currently going on with the respective authorities for him to scale several skyscrapers in China, the United States and the United Arab Emirates.
"It is one of my dreams to climb the (world’s tallest 828-metre) Burj Khalifa in Dubai before I die," Robert said.
