AUSTRIA KEEN TO EXPLORE BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES, COOPERATION WITH MALAYSIA

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 8 (Bernama) -- Austria is keen to explore more business
opportunities and cooperation with Malaysia to tap the Southeast Asian
potential.

President Dr Heinz Fischer said areas that his country could offer
assistance would include environmental technology and renewable energy.

"Austria is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, so it
is vital for us to keep our environment clean. That's why we invest hugely in
renewable energy resources," he said at Malaysia-Austria Economic Forum here
Monday.

Present was Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

Austria generates about 62.89 per cent of its electricity supply from
renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and biomass.

Fischer said Malaysia's move in committing to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions by 40 per cent by 2020 was timely and in line with global initiatives
in going green.

On Monday's forum, he said it would become a platform for Malaysian and Austrian businessmen to intensify bilateral relations particularly in economic cooperation.

It would also provide significant opportunities for the business community in both countries to explore potential projects and technical cooperation, he added.

Fischer, who arrived yesterday for a three-day visit, also witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Taiping Cable Car Sdn Bhd and Doppelmayr Seilbahnen GmbH to explore the possibility of developing a cable car system for urban areas.

About 45 Austrian companies from sectors including green technology, renewable energy and engineering attended the forum to build networks and enhance cooperation with their local counterparts
