FILM FESTIVALS ENABLE PEOPLE TO LEARN FOREIGN CULTURE

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 11 (Bernama) -- Film festivals enable people from around
the world to learn more about foreign cultures and ways of life, said
Information Communication and Culture Minister Dr Rais Yatim.

He said film festivals in general had been gaining much popularity in the
country and many of Malaysia's filmmakers, actors and actresses had graced
foreign film festivals and earned accolades for their creative efforts.

"Communication and mutual understanding should not be limited to only the
political and business levels, as understanding from the perspectives of culture
and arts are just as significant to facilitate and enhance communication.

"Therefore, I appreciate the organisation of the European Union Film
Festival, an annual event that showcases a collection of films which draw on the
diverse and rich cultures of Europe," he said at the launching of the 11th
European Union Film Festival here, Wednesday.

The text of his speech was read out by his deputy Maglin Dennis
D'Cruz.

The festival will be held from Nov 11 until 21 at GSC International
Screens in three selected shopping complexes -- Mid Valley, Pavilion Kuala
Lumpur and 1Utama.

It will showcase a total of 18 European films from 15 different countries,
offered a wide range of films ranging from drama, documentary, comedy as well as
life and culture in Europe.

Tickets for the festival are priced at RM5 each (about US$1.60)
(US$1=RM3.09), except for the Spanish movie, El Bola, which is complimentary.
