58 SPECIALIST DOCTORS FROM EGYPT TO SERVE IN MALAYSIA
KULAIJAYA (Malaysia), Nov 15 (Bernama) – The Malaysian government will
obtain the service of 58 specialist doctors from Egypt by year end to overcome
the shortage of doctors at several hospitals nationwide, said Health Minister
Liow Tiong Lai.
He said the service of the affected doctors was obtained following
negotiations between the Egyptian and Malaysian governments and that the
ministry had received the list of the doctors' names.
"They will be employed on contract for two years, and when they return to
their country, these doctors will not lose their seniority if they go back to
the same hospital," he told reporters after visiting Temenggong Seri Maharaja
Tun Ibrahim Hospital here Sunday.
He said the selected doctors had been screened by the Egyptian government.
Previously, specialist doctors from other countries were employed through
advertisements and did not involve negotiations between the governments, which
ended with some of the doctors having problems and not meeting the desired
expectations.
Liow said the government would also hold similar negotiations with other countries, like India and Pakistan, in the recruitment of foreign doctors.
In another development, Liow said Temenggong Seri Maharaja Tun Ibrahim Hospital would serve as a teaching hospital for students taking medical programme with Monash University.
"A ward and an operating theatre will be made available for use by Monash University and this will help us overcome shortage of doctors at the hospital," he added.
Liow also said he would request for an immediate allocation of RM22 million (US$7.07 million) (US$1=RM3.1) from the government to resolve the problem on shortage of medicines facing hospitals in Johor.
Hospitals in other states do not have the problem" he added.
