THAILAND WELCOMES SUU KYI'S RELEASE

BANGKOK, Nov 15 (BERNAMA) – Thailand on Sunday described Myanmar democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi's release on Nov 13 as another important step in the national reconciliation and democratisation process in Myanmar.

In welcoming the release, the Thai government hoped Suu Kyi would have a constructive role in Myanmar's nation building process.

"The Royal Thai government reaffirms its commitment to cooperating with the new Government of Myanmar in these endeavours for peace, development, and prosperity of Myanmar as well as for the well-being of the Myanmar people," it said in a statement.

Suu Kyi, the Nobel peace prize winner, was released on Nov 13 from her house detention in Rangoon since 2003 which was part of her 20 years detention.

She led the National League for Democracy (NLD) which won a landslide victory in Myanmar in a general election 20 years ago, but the junta military did not recognise the results.
