MALAYSIANS LESS FEARFUL OF BECOMING VICTIM OF CRIME: SURVEY

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 18 (Bernama) -- Malaysians are now less fearful of
becoming a victim of crime, according to a survey by TNS Research International,
the world's largest custom market research specialist.

The fear of becoming a victim of, among others, murder, rape, robbery,
aggravated assault and property crime in the country has declined from 58.5
per cent last December to 55.1 per cent in May this year, said its managing
director, Yazid Jamian.

In a statement Thursday, he said the 3.4 per cent drop within a short time
period was significant and marked a commendable improvement as it indicated
that Malaysians were now less fearful of becoming victim of crime.

The survey was conducted to measure the effectiveness of the bold Government
Transformation Plan (GTP)'s crime reduction National Key Results Area (NKRA)
since the initiative kicked off late last year.

He said that the nationwide survey, reflective of the total population in
terms of race, gender, age and strata income, was conducted amongst a random
sample of 1,200 Malaysians aged 18 and above, covering both urban and rural
areas.

"The survey was specially designed to gauge whether the various
crime-fighting initiatives conducted by the government under the GTP's crime
reduction NKRA are truly felt by the rakyat," he said.

In a separate survey, Yazid said, Malaysians' satisfaction with the services
provided by the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) had increased from 35.8 per cent
in December last year to 42.2 per cent in May this year.

In the survey, a sample size of 607 respondents with a minimum of 150
respondents for each hotspot location in the states of Selangor, Kuala Lumpur,
Penang and Johor was used.
