MALAYSIA WILL NOT FACE FOOD CRISIS WITH RAPID TECHNOLOGICAL DEVT - FAMA DG
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 20 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will not face a food crisis with rapid technological development in agriculture and food processing.
Federal Agricultural and Marketing Authority (Fama) director-general Mohamed
Shariff Abdul Aziz said enhanced technology and innovation would enable food to
be produced in larger quantities to meet the demand from the country's
increasing population.
"(With better technology) we hope to increase crop yields from each acre of
land to perhaps 10 tonnes, compared with two or three tonnes previously. It's
the same with green technology.
"By controlling the temperature and with precision agriculture through
ensuring the right quantity of water, nutrients and other elements, we may have
output all-year round instead of seasonal," he said when interviewed during
Radio 24's Hot Seat programme, here, Friday.
Mohamed Shariff said although the global community was often reminded that a
food crisis could occur due to increased population, he was positive that Fama
would be able to take the necessary measures to overcome the problem.
He said technology had also created variations of food, giving Malaysians
more choices according to their tastes and preferences.
"We have so many choices now...whether we want fresh or processed food, and
there's also convenient food, functional food...food we can choose according to
our nutritional needs.
"God willing, we will be able to avoid a food crisis in our country.
Technology allows for change according to our wants and when we face a (food)
crisis, we will be able to solve it."
On the Malaysian Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism Exposition 2010
from this Nov 26, Mohamed Shariff said 25,000 products would be sold by more
than 2,000 booths run by local and foreign participants.
He said for the comfort of visitors, more facilities would be provided
including resting areas, surau and toilets.
