Hasina greets winners of local body polls

DHAKA, Bangladesh, Aug 6 (BSS)-Awami League president and former prime minister Sheikh Hasina has congratulated the newly elected city
and municipal mayors and councillors.

Greeting party leaders and workers, she said the victory has
come on collective efforts and cooperation of all, according to a
party press release here today.

She said their efforts would pave the way for establishing
democracy and rule of law in the country.

Sheikh Hasina called upon the government to show respect to
the verdict of the people and release newly elected mayor
Badaruddin Ahmed Kamran from jail. She also called for releasing
other arrested leaders and workers of Awami League and its front
organizations.

Referring to some untoward incidents at different places
including Barisal city during the elections, she asked the
Election Commission and others concerned to remain alert to avoid
such incidents in future elections.

She said the massive participation of the people in the
elections even after the state of emergency has proved that they
want to establish a democratic government in the country through
free, fair and acceptable elections.

She urged the government, the Election Commission and all
other relevant bodies to remain vigilant to make sure that the
