PARENTING SKILLS SHOULD NOT BE LIMITED TO MARRIED COUPLES
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 22 (Bernama) -- Parenting skills should not be limited to
married couples or those who wish to get married, said Rosmah Mansor, wife of
Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak.
She said the skills should instead be extended to those who were given the
responsiblity to nurture children and help them develop like childcare centre
operators, nannies, social workers and single parents.
"There is an increasing trend even in Malaysia where children have been
adopted and raised by successful career women or men who chose to stay single.
"In various instances, an adopted child brought up by a single parent who is
well off, tends to be lavishly showered with materials and attention which
eventually turned the child into a spoilt brat.
"Therefore, it is even more critical for this category of parents to seek
the necessary knowledge and skills so that they can practise this positively to
meet the challenges of 21st century parenting," she said at the Positive
Parenting Programme's 10th anniversary celebration, here, Sunday.
Rosmah also launched a guidebook on parenthood, "Welcoming Baby", at the
event.
Positive Parenting Programme, initiated by the Malaysian Paediatric
Association, provides practical information, advice and tips on maternal and
family wellness, child health and paediatrics, child nutrition and child
development.
Rosmah who is also the patron of Permata Negara (National Gems), said
parenting had become more challenging than ever before due to changing attitudes
in today's society marked by the intensity of globalisation.
Under the Permata Negara programme, the children are 'gems' that need to be
polished under a special 'learning-is-fun-through-play' programme based on the
Pen Green Children Centre in Corby, England.
"Some of the challenges are single parenting, siblings' rivalry, negative
influence from the media, children with special needs and disabilities, and
financial limitation."
She said parenting styles provided a robust indicator of parenting
functioning that predicted child wellbeing across a wide spectrum of
environments and diverse communites of children.
