Standing Deputy Prime Minister visits Thoulakhom district

(KPL) Standing Deputy Prime Minister Somsavat Lengsavad and representatives from the various ministries toured the Thoulakhom district of Vientiane province and met its residents on 2 August.

During the visit, the head of the district briefed the visitors on the
socio-economic work of the local administration over the past year..
He told the visitors that the living conditions of the people in his
district have improved because the area under rice cultivation has increased
to 9,000 hectares, yielding nearly 39,000 tons and enjoying an average of
4.3 tons per hectare.
Then he said that the total area for the second rice season is 4,577
hectares, which yielded 19,681 tons and again the average yield per hectare
is 4.3 tons.
Summing on the production of rice in his district, he said that it produces
58,000 tons of rice per year and the per capita figure is 1,000 kg.
The district head said he sees a need for the people to diversify into other
economic activities. One of them is to grow different types of plants
(ketsana, teak and fruit trees) and another is to raise livestock. Another
crop, he said that the people can grow is maize, as it can be sold to the
animal food and food processing factories in the province.
Presently, the heavy rainfall over the past months has destroyed some of the
crops and destroyed some property, said the district head.
Speaking to the local residents, Mr. Somsavad said the local administrators
had achieved much and he urged the people to keep up with their agricultural
production.
During the visit, the visitors toured the district's wood processing factory
and the rice fields that were affected by floodwater.
