Must sustain high-growth rate to address poverty, illiteracy:FM

Kochi, Nov 27 (PTI) India must sustain its economic
growth rate for at least 10-15 years if issues like poverty
and illiteracy are to be addressed, Indian Finance minister
Pranab Mukherjee said here in the south Indian state of
Kerala Saturday.
"The growth rate must be sustained for at least 10-15
years if we want to address the problems of poverty, illiteracy
,diseases and other issues. This requires an inclusive growth
and empowering of large section of people who are outside the
mainstream," he said.
Mukherjee said empowerment must be backed by entitlement
and entitlement backed by enactment.
The Finance Minister said the economy was moving onward
and that there would have been few takers a decade ago if
somebody had projected that the (Indian) economy would grow at
8.5 per cent of Gross Domestic Product.
This growth is despite international slowdown and fiscal
crisis, he said while delivering the inaugural address at the
42nd Regional conference of the Southern India Regional
Council of the Institution of Chartered Accountants of India
here.
The minister said economic growth in India and China was
the catchword at the international fora. "This does not mean
that we have overcome all our problems and we have achieved
all the goals", he said. MORE PTI UD
