AUTOMATED ENFORCEMENT SYSTEM EXPECTED TO BE IMPLEMENTED BY 2011

KUCHING (Sarawak, Malaysia), Nov 30 (Bernama)-- The proposed Automated Enforcement System (AES)is expected to be rolled out in stages beginning January next year, aimed at reducing accident rates, road fatalities and improve safety on roads.

Road Safety Department (JKJR) director-general Suret Singh said the AES was a proposed traffic enforcement system using unmanned cameras at strategic locations throughout the country, to deter traffic offenders from speeding and red light violations.

He said the system was in line with the long-term plan to inculcate the road safety culture in the country and also to achieve Malaysia's Zero Fatality Vision.

"AES will be rolled out in stages once amendments to the Road Transport Act 1987 are passed in Parliament next month. After the law is in place, from early next year, we will be ready to implement the AES online and in real-time nationwide.

"In the first phase to come into force by January, it will target speed violators and red light violation," he told reporters after presenting a working paper at the Malaysian Road Safety Council congress here Monday.

Suret said road safety culture was lacking in a significant portion of Malaysians and the community was not aware of the values of life.
