MINISTER TICKS OFF GOVT DEPTS, GLCs THAT DO NOT RESPOND TO COMPLAINTS

JELEBU (Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia), Nov 30 (Bernama) -- Government departments and government-linked companies that do not respond to complaints from the public promptly came under fire from Information Communication and Culture Minister Dr Rais Yatim Monday.

He said small matters that could be easily dealt with were often delayed by them causing the people to have to raise these with ministers.

"It might be that officers from these entities like Tenaga Nasional Berhad and Telekom do not go down to the ground often enough to see for themselves how they are faring with the people," he told Bernama after having a "teh tarik" (tea) session with members of the Chinese community in Pekan Titi here.

Rais had come to Pekan Titi to hear for himself grievances from its community about their complaints being ignored by government departments and GLCs so much so they wanted him to intervene personally.

One of the complaints was about a streetlighting pole being erected in front of a house, which caused "headaches" for its occupants.

Rais, who is also the Member of Parliament for Jelebu, also told assemblymen and district officers to be "on the ball" and go down to the ground more often to look into the people's welfare.

He also called for meetings with the people to be more informal and to do without the "fanfare".

"I have been doing this since 1974. We sit down and have "teh tarik" or coffee at a coffee shop and iron out issues. This is far better than having elaborate functions," he said.

It was also a good way of showing that the Barisan Nasional cared for the people whereby "no issue was to small to be looked into", he added.
