MOROCCAN KING: FOREIGN INTERERENCE MAJOR CAUSE OF INSTABILITY
TRIPOLI, Nov 30 (Bernama) -- Morocco's King Mohammed VI has stressed that one of
the causes of insecurity and instability in the country was foreign interference
in domestic affairs.
He said there was an imperative need to respect the territorial integrity of
African countries, rejecting any interference in domestic affairs, particularly
that which was aimed at tearing the continent apart and spreading insecurity,
war and anarchy.
"Only terrorist groups, which are becoming increasingly active in our region,
stand to benefit from the destabilisation of African countries.
"We, therefore, have to work together to combat transnational threats such as
terrorism, piracy, cross-border crimes, trafficking of all kinds and
hostage-taking.
"To this end, we need enhanced cooperation at regional, sub-regional and
inter-regional levels, as well as a solidarity-based, inclusive approach
involving all the countries concerned," he said in a message to participants of
the 3rd African Union-European Union Summit which opened here Monday.
On transnational threats, the king said: "We are concerned about the recent
escalation of terrorist activities aimed at destabilising the region and
undermining the security of countries in the Sahel-Saharan zone."
He stressed that everyone was concerned about the precariousness of the
situation prevailing in the region and the many resultant challenges.
This, therefore, highlighted the need for strong regional and international
cooperation and for an integrated approach to security and development, he said.
On the issue of migration and development, he said Morocco called for the
establishment of a stronger link between migration and development strategies.
Referring to climate change, the king affirmed that there were more than just
environmental issues to be concerned about.
“Needless to say, climate change has a global impact, but it is Africa that
remains most vulnerable to its adverse and, at times, devastating effects," he
noted.
