Raise awareness about the importance of population trends

VIENTIANE, DEC 22.(KPL) - The Ministry of Planning and Investment and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) on 21 December, at the Vansana Riverside Hotel, Vientiane Capital held a population seminar with aim to raise awareness about the importance of population trends and dynamics as a key element for national planning and development.
This year, has many important events of the cooperation between Lao government and UNFPA launched the World Population Day held on July and we also organised the population seminar and disseminated world population entitles “from conflict and crisis to renewal: generation of change” which is organised every years, said Mrs. Sisomboun Ounavong, Deputy Director of International Cooperation Department, Ministry of Planning and Investment. Currently, the world population tends to change from extension, so the research is a necessary for drafting policy.
This seminar has proposed different result of population study with the aim to comprehend for trainees on population.
This year focuses on the situation of women and young people in conflict and natural disasters. In many today’s conflicts and natural disasters, women are disempowered by physical and mental abuse, and by the HIV infection, trauma and disabilities that often result from it. Girls are disempowered when they cannot go to school because of the threat of violence, when they are abducted or trafficked, or when their families disintegrate or must flee. In some conflicts, men are also disempowered by violence. Boys, too, are sometimes exploited or forced to become soldiers. The report is based on a study prepared and developed globally by UNFPA to evaluate the situation of the different countries regarding the international conference on Population and Development (ICPD) and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). As Lao PDR lives in peace and luckily has not been affected by natural disasters recently, the theme of this year’s report is not a priority issue for Lao PDR. However, the report can be used as a reference for the government and young learners or researchers to learn more about these issues and continue to eradicate poverty, reduce gender imbalance and keep the momentum of development.
“The State of World Population 2010 explores how conflict and protracted humanitarian emergencies affect women and girls-and men and boys-and shows how many women and young people have overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles and have begun rebuilding their lives and laying the foundation for peace and renewal of their societies” say UNFPA’s Representative, Mieko Yabuta.
