Capital's airport continues to grow by double digits

Abu Dhabi, Dec 26, 2010 (WAM)- Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) on Saturday said Abu Dhabi International Airport registered a 15.4 per cent increase in passenger traffic in Nov-ember, continuing the positive trend the airport has been experiencing this year to 949,000 passengers.
Aircraft movements grew by 5.7 per cent to 9,800.
The airport's traffic report for November revealed 9 per cent growth in cargo traffic, with close to 40,000 tonnes of freight handled throughout the month, making it the second busiest month of the year, mainly due to the F1 activities and the expansion of Etihad's cargo operations.
Aviation growth market
London, Bangkok, Doha, Cairo and Manila were the five busiest routes, which collectively claimed 20 per cent of the passenger traffic in November.
The regions with the highest reported traffic growth were North America with 23 per cent, the Far East with 19 per cent and Europe with 17 per cent.
Ahmad Al Haddabi, Senior Vice-President of Airports Operations at ADAC, commented: "The increased passenger traffic at Abu Dhabi International Airport during November is attributed mainly to the various activities and holidays, namely the Haj pilgrimage, Eid Al Adha holiday and the Abu Dhabi Formula One Grand Prix, which generated considerable passenger movements.
"As we're coming to the end of the year, it is apparent that Abu Dhabi International Airport enjoyed dynamic growth throughout 2010, further strengthening its position as a major international gateway," he said.
The Middle East is the world's second highest aviation growth market, driven by fast-growing airlines, including Etihad, that are driving the passenger growth at Abu Dhabi International Airport.
Last week, the global aviation watchdog the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said Middle East carriers are expected to see 2010 profits of US$700 million (Dh2.5 billion) shrink to US$400 million in 2011. It will be the fastest growing region in both 2010 and 2011. – Gulf News
