Laxman guides India to 292-run lead at lunch

SPORT-IND-LD LUNCH

Durban, Dec 28 (PTI) VVS Laxman remained on course for
his 17th Test century as India swelled their overall lead to
292 against South Africa at lunch on the third day of the
second cricket Test here on Tuesday.
The 36-year-old Hyderabadi slammed 11 fours in 140 balls
to remain unconquered at 86 as India reached 218 for seven in
their second innings at lunch at the Kingsmead cricket ground
here.
Laxman added 48 runs for the sixth wicket with skipper
Mahendra Singh Dhoni, before sharing an unbeaten 70-run eighth
wicket stand with Zaheer Khan to take India's lead close to
the 300-mark. At the break, Zaheer was giving him company on
27.
Earlier, overnight batsman Cheteshwar Pujara (10) was the
first wicket to fall this morning when he failed to negotiate
the extra bit of bounce from Morne Morkel and was bowled out.
Morne pitched the ball around off stump as Pujara looked
to ride it but it bounced higher than he expected and after
hitting his bat, trickled onto the stumps.
However, new man Dhoni eased the pressure as he drove
past Morkel for a boundary in the 34th over, before picking up
two more fours off Dale Steyn at square leg and backward point
in consecutive deliveries.
Laxman also dealt in boundaries as he steered one off
Morkel over slips to the fence.
In the 38th over, Laxman got another lucky boundary when
an outside edge off Lonwabo Tsotsobe flew over the slip cordon
as India took their lead past 200 runs.
The Hyderabadi picked up another boundary with a gentle
push on the backfoot at point off Morkel en route to his
48-run sixth wicket stand with Dhoni.
But Tsotsobe broke the partnership in the 42nd over,
dismissing Dhoni when he induced an edge off the Indian
skipper with an out-swinger as India slipped to 141 for six.
Eighth down Harbhajan Singh also didn't last long and was
sent back to the pavilion by Morkel in the first delivery of
the 45th over. More PTI Cor
