Sheikha Lubna inaugurates UAE-Syrian Businessmen Forum
Damascus, Dec 29, 2010 (WAM) - UAE Minister of Foreign Trade Sheikha Lubna bint Khalid Al Qasimi and Syrian Minister of Finance Dr. Mohammad Al-Hussein here yesterday inaugurated the "UAE-Syrian Businessmen Forum.”
Syrian Minister of Economy and Trade, Lamia Asi and a number of Syrian ministers, businessmen and members of the Emirati delegation were present on the occasion.
In her speech during the opening ceremony, Sheikha Lubna confirmed the strong relations between UAE and Syria and keenness to boost them in various fields especially trade and investment under the directives of President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. She also pointed out that distinctive bilateral relations have contributed to building a solid base of mutual cooperation, especially in the economic field along with the establishment of developmental projects in the interest of the two countries.
Sheikha Lubna explained that trade between the two countries during the past five years has increased from about US$259 million in 2005 to about US$322 million in 2009 with a growth rate of 24 per cent. UAE exports to Syria has increased by 16 per cent from about US$172 million to about US$201 million. Meanwhile, Syria's exports to UAE is also up by 40 per cent during this period, from US$ 86 million to US$121 million.
Meanwhile, Sheikha Lubna said that business community play important role in promotion of economic cooperation between the countries especially in trade field and investment.
She also reviewed the recent developments in UAE's economy highlighting that the national economy has succeeded in reducing the global financial crisis implications with the support of the wise leadership, vigorous economy and the solidity and professionalism of the actions implemented in this respect.
The UAE's economy indicators during the current year are encouraging and positive as it is expected that the national economy will grow by 2.3 per cent with a GDP exceeding trillion dirhams.
Syrian Minister of Finance Dr. Mohammad Al-Hussein stressed the importance of constructive dialogue and communication between private sectors in the two countries for the sake of enhancing economic cooperation.
He spelled out the financial and tax breaks Damascus offers to investors, affirming that ''The economic and investment situation in Syria today is much more different than yesterday in term of financial incentives and broader banking openness.
Syrian Minister of Economy and Trade Lamia Asi said the Syrian economy was growing in reasonable rates, offering numerous, diverse investment opportunities in areas like industry, tourism, electricity, oil and gas, and infrastructure.
