Laos, Myanmar agree on further multifaceted cooperation
VIENTIANE,10 JAN.(KPL)- High-ranking officials of Laos and Myanmar met in Pakse district, Champassak province, last week to discuss further cooperation and seek possible ways for enhancing the ties between the two countries in the future.
The meeting has also pledged to further enhance the existing friendly relations and long-standing cooperation between the Lao PDR and Myanmar.
The 10th meeting of the Lao-Myanmar Joint Cooperation Commissions held on 9-10 January, was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs of Myarmar Nyan Win and his delegation and the Lao delegation was led by Deputy Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith.
The visit of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Myarmar Nyan Win and his delegation will continue until 12 January.
The bilateral meeting has unanimously agreed on different fields of co-operation including further promotion of regular exchange visit between high-ranking and local delegations, enhancing cooperation in cruising along the Mekong River, information exchange between the two security forces of the two countries.
They have also agreed to further cooperate in agriculture, irrigation and forestry and assessment of the implementation of the MOU signed at a high-ranking official meeting, in Myanmar in 2008, between the Ministry of Industry and Commerce of the Lao PDR and the Ministry of Commerce of Myanmar.
The two sides have also agreed to cooperate in organising trade fairs along the common border that will be held twice a week and take turn to host the fair.
They have agreed to further promote tourism between the two countries including ecotourism and culture.
The Lao side has pledged to help the technical team of Myanmar in hosting the 27th SEA Games hosted in Myanmar in 2013.
Myanmar has also agreed to give a few scholarships to Lao students to study Burmese language and Lao monks to learn Buddhism and jewellery skills in Myanmar.
In the meeting, they have reviewed on the previous relations and cooperation based on the memorandum of understanding approved at the previous meeting in Myanmar held from 17-18 November last year.
Various works were based on the previous minute have been in progress satisfactorily. The most outstanding work was the exchange visit between high-ranking officials of the two countries such as the exchange visit to Myanmar in March 2010 of former Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh and state visit to Laos in June 2010 of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar Senior Major General Than Shwe, his spouse and delegation, the state visit of a Myanmar delegation to Laos in October 2010, and Myanmar Prime Minister Thein Sein participated in the grand opening ceremony of the 25th SEA Games in Vientiane Capital.
On security cooperation, the two countries have signed a memorandum of understanding on the establishment of border committees at provincial and regional levels.
Laos and Myanmar have expressed the satisfaction over the enforcement of the agreement on doubled tax collection and prevention of tax avoidance between the two countries, which just came into force on 21 September 2010.
On the frameworks of the bilateral cooperation, the two sides have also supported each other in the framework of regional cooperation, including ASEAN, GMS, ACMECS, the Mekong-Japan Cooperation and other international arenas.
In addition, there are some issues the two sides will further cooperate to seek more funds for the construction of a Lao-Myanmar Friendship Bridge over the Mekong River, cruise fee along the Mekong River, suppression of bad elements operating along the common border causing problems to the cruise along the Mekong River, and others.
