UAE launches US$100 million reconstruction programme in Pakistan
Abu Dhabi, Jan 16, 2011 (WAM)- Upon the directives of UAE President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE assistance project Pakistan was launched yesterday at a total cost of US$100 million in the presence of a number of officials in the Pakistani government and military leaders of Pakistan for the reconstruction of infrastructure damaged by the devastating floods last year.
The Project, which focuses on four major sectors: education, public health, roads and bridges. was rolled out by UAE Ambassador to Pakistan Ali Saif Al Awani Owais Ahmed Ghani, Governor of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province in Pakistan, and a number of senior Pakistani civilian and military officials.
The project comes within the framework of the good efforts by the UAE to help Arab and Islamic countries as one of the leading donors in the field of humanitarian aid and international development around the world.
The UAE and Pakistan maintain long-standing and close friendly relations since the founding of UAE by late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. And, it has been an integral part of the UAE leadership's vision to support Pakistan. UAE does not only provide support to Pakistan in the times of crises i.e. natural calamities, earthquakes and floods but also work towards maintaining Pakistan's comprehensive security, stability, economic progress and prosperity.
An in-depth study demonstrates UAE's unwavering commitment in supporting the efforts to promote stability in Pakistan and help achieve its comprehensive development by enabling the country to face natural disasters and humanitarian crises is one of the major pillars of the UAE's foreign policy. In line with a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two countries UAE will execute a comprehensive development plan costing an estimated amount of US$100 million (Dh367 million) to create job opportunities in flood-hit areas of Pakistan.
Addressing the launching ceremony, Abdullah Al Ghafli, Director of the Project, said the UAE had played a significant role in mobilising international humanitarian cooperation in support of the Pakistani brethren based on strategic and humanitarian considerations enshrined in ''our foreign policy''.
According to him, the UAE aid aims to help the Pakistani people survive calamities they face and its government to address and overcome economic woes in order to achieve sustainable development.
''Built on an integrated field study on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Region and Tribal Areas near Waziristan, the assistance programme will be implemented in coordination with the Pakistan Army Command and other relevant government bodies,'' he added.
The project calls for building and rebuilding of a number of hospitals and health clinics, establishing a new nursing institute, commissioning of water purification and water resources management stations, and extending drinking water networks. Two devastated bridges will be rehabilitated and new roads will be built by the Khalifa bin Zayed Charity Foundation.
He disclosed that some 120 contracts of these projects in tune of US$65 million were inked over the last few days UAE Ambassador to Pakistan Ali Saif Al Awani affirmed the UAE's determination to carry out these projects in consistence with the best practices in order to become signature features that reflect the depth of Emirati-Pakistani brotherly ties.
`He said the UAE humanitarian, charitable organisations had really made a qualitative leap in the international humanitarian work.
Owais Ahmed Ghani, Governor of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, commended the humanitarian sense of the leadership, government and people of the UAE and their sincere desire to stretch a helping hand to sisterly and friendly countries under the leadership of President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
