Masdar CEO calls for energy efficiency and water conservation to tackle climate challenges

Abu Dhabi, Jan 18, 2011 (WAM) - Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, CEO Masdar has called for energy efficiency and water conservation to handle climate challenges in a better and improved way.
"Today's renewable energy technologies, alone will face difficulty, in solving the climate challenge. Therefore, energy must come from a mix of sources which are clean, energy efficient and cost effective. And a mix that will need to include: clean fossil fuels, peaceful nuclear energy, and of course, renewable energy", he said in his opening speech at the fourth World Future Energy Summit (WFES) which kicked off on Monday at ADNEC with 33 official delegations participating at the summit's opening ceremony.
Held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and hosted by Masdar, the World Future Energy Summit is a unique business platform aiding the global development and commercialisation of renewable energy solutions with more than 3000 delegates confirmed their participation for the first day of the summit.
He said that UAE has placed great emphasis on engaging and contributing to international energy, but to realistically meet the 2050 target of limiting global temperature rise to 2 degrees Celsius we must recognise and accept, that today's renewable energy technologies, alone will face difficulty, in solving the climate challenge.
"Therefore, energy must come from a mix of sources. Sources that are clean, energy efficient and cost effective. And a mix that will need to include: clean fossil fuels, peaceful nuclear energy, and of course, renewable energy".
H.H. General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the United Arab Emirates armed forces, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, Bangladeshi Premier Sheikh Hasina Wajid besides a large number of international delegates were present during the opening ceremony.
Welcoming the guests Dr. Al Jaber said that every year, this Summit encourages an open dialogue and promotes new ideas, innovation and investment, in the renewable energy and clean technology sector.
Abu Dhabi, through Masdar, he continued "provides you with an open global platform for cooperation and partnerships. The Masdar initiative is a testament, of our wise and visionary leadership's determination to advance renewable energy technologies, mitigate climate change, diversify our economy and prepare our nation for a clean energy future".
"As this Summit shows, our commitment extends beyond our borders and because we recognise, that the energy solutions, the world needs today, cannot be driven by one country alone. They will be found across borders, and built between nations. They will be stimulated by collaboration, and founded on public-private partnerships." He reiterated that with this in mind, the UAE has placed great emphasis on engaging and contributing to international energy and climate change discussions, as demonstrated in Cancun last month.
Al Jaber noted that the outcome at COP 16 - the Cancun Agreements - restored confidence in the multi-lateral process. It showed determination, by developed and developing nations, to find common ground and tackle climate change as a global community. However, the most important progress, made over 2010, is the shift, from a top-down....internationally driven approach to a more realistic bottom-up, country led effort.
He added "As a result, we now have a substantive and balanced package of decisions and a clear roadmap of the way forward. These are significant developments that bring us closer to a global deal, and demonstrate that international dialogue and co-operation, can yield results".
Masdar CEO elaborated that to ensure the emergence of the most commercially viable, scalable and efficient technology, "we must create competition, not across the energy mix, but instead, within each technology share. This way, renewable energy sources will compete against other renewable energy sources, for available R'&'D funds and financial incentives".
He added that this approach, will accelerate technological and economic improvements of renewable and low-carbon energy sources. Competition drives innovation. It will yield the development of tomorrow's most reliable and affordable clean energy sources.
"In parallel, we must tackle the challenge from its roots by focusing our attention on energy efficiency and water conservation. These areas, If properly addressed, can have a significant impact on our progress towards a sustainable future".
He indicated that to ensure this progress, "we must catalyze policy implementation, and develop the required regulatory frameworks, that encourage the use of clean energy technologies.
World Future Energy Summit will discuss the policy, technology, finance and investment - that are fundamental to the advancement of the renewable energy sector. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
