Pakistan is ready to share expertise in hydel and nuclear power generation, Zardari
Abu Dhabi, Jan 18, 2011 (WAM) - President Asif Ali Zardari has said that Pakistan is ready to share its expertise in hydel and nuclear power generation, under IAEA safeguards.
In his speech at the opening ceremony of the fourth World Future Energy Summit (WFES) which was held at ADNEC, Abu Dhabi the president said: "we are ready to share our experience with others by offering technical assistance, and cooperation to help developing countries harness these important and carbon neutral sources of energy".
"It is a great privilege and honour to address this important conference. I wish to thank H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and the Government of the United Arab Emirates for convening this Summit", the president said.
He said that energy is synonymous with civilisation. It is the lifeline for economic growth and development. The continuing volatility of fuel prices and conventional energy's deep carbon foot print coupled with close nexus between water, energy, and food security has brought energy access and energy security issues into even sharper focus.
The imperative of economic growth and development for developing economies like Pakistan lends further urgency to the need to find energy solutions that are feasible, sustainable and cost-effective.
Efficient utilisation of existing energy resources, effective energy conservation measures and deployment of cleaner technology would afford us the energy security that we need in future to sustain green and environment friendly growth, he remarked.
"Neither the state nor the private sector could manage this formidable challenge alone", he said and added that we will have to encourage public - private partnerships to find sustainable energy solutions in future.
"I would like to make a call from this platform for a global partnership on renewable energy, involving both public and private sector - dedicated to bringing down the cost of renewable energy to affordable levels".
"We need to promote greater regional collaboration particularly between energy producing and consuming countries. Pakistan is willing to act as an energy hub and is actively pursuing a number of important initiatives in this regard".
"We also need to revisit the debate on the environmental feasibility of big hydel power generation projects and nuclear power plants, bearing in mind the high cost of carbon intensive growth".
On its part, Pakistan is ready to share its expertise with others in hydel and nuclear power generation, under IAEA safeguards, by offering technical assistance, and cooperation to help developing countries harness these important and carbon neutral sources of energy, Zardari said.
"As a member of International Renewable Energy Agency, we hope IRENA will play a game-changing role in sharing international best practices in renewable energy, providing access to financing mechanisms, building capacity, and facilitate technology transfer from developed to developing countries".
Pakistan's energy consumption, on account of growing population and developing economy is on the rise. Consequently, we face serious electricity shortfall.
Luckily, Pakistan is blessed with coal reserves of over 200 billion tones. They remain virtually untapped. The present government has initiated two projects to develop clean coal.
We have enormous hydropower potential. We plan to increase the share of Hydropower from present 33 percent to 65 per cent in the national energy mix.
"We are determined to increase the share of renewables in our energy mix to 6% by 2020. A number of projects based on other renewable fuels, including wind, waste to energy, biomass and biodiesel are being pursued in the private sector", the president noted.
"Pakistan is committed to Energy efficiency and its conservation in all sectors of the economy, which can yield up to 25-30 per cent efficiency in the overall economic functions and bring about increased competitive advantage to our local industry".
In conclusion, the president said that "let me reiterate our firm commitment to provide sustainable and affordable energy solutions to the people of Pakistan and to this end our willingness to work collaboratively with the international community both regionally and globally to promote sustainable energy solutions". - Emirates News Agency, WAM
