NATO-ICI Ambassadorial Conference Opens Tuesday in Doha

Doha, February 14 (QNA) - Regional security challenges, North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) in the next decade and its partnership with Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI) will be mulled at workshops organised under the aegis of ICI Ambassadorial Conference opening here tomorrow, Tuesday.
HE Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces Hamad bin Ali Al Attiyah will deliver the opening address of the plenary session while NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen will give the keynote address of the one-day conference which will also discuss how to enhance political consultation and co-operation.
Rapporteurs will present summaries of the workshops at the closing session.
NATO's Istanbul Co-operation Initiative, launched at the Alliance's Summit in the Turkish city in June 2004, aims to contribute to long-term global and regional security by offering countries of the broader Middle East region practical bilateral security co-operation with NATO.
The ICI focuses on practical co-operation in areas where NATO can add value, notably in security.
Six countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council were initially invited to participate. To date, four of these -- Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates -- have joined. Saudi Arabia and Oman have also shown an interest in the Initiative, according to NATO website.
Based on the principle of inclusiveness, the Initiative is, however, open to all interested countries of the broader Middle East region who subscribe to its aims and content, including the fight against terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
