Flood fatalities reach 125 in northern provinces

Hanoi (VNA) - Flood fatalities had by the end of August 13 reached 125 and 38 others were still missing in northern mountainous provinces, according to the Central Steering Board for Flood and Storm Control.

The statistics were released at the board's meeting on August 14 with the Government Office and relevant ministries to jointly make proposal for government assistance to the flood-hit provinces of Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Phu Tho, Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang and Son La.

The Health Ministry said it is taking urgent measures to help the above-said localities to restore environment sanitation, boost community health careservices and prevent epidemics possibly occurring after floods.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is working out a plan to provide the disaster-stricken provinces with seeds to help them restore production while the Ministry of Education and Training is assisting them inrepairing schools.

Organisations and individuals throughout the country are continuing theirfund-raising movement for natural disaster victims.

The industry and trade sector has donated more than 5.6 billion VND, including 3.6 billion VND from the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group, 700 million VND from the Vietnam Coal-Mineral Industries Group, 600 million VND from the Vietnam Chemicals Corporation and 200 million VND each from theVietnam National Petroleum Corporation and the Vietnam Steel Corporation.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs staff raised more than 300 million VND forthe victims.

Northern Hai Phong city sent 400 million VND to the people in flooded areas and central Quang Binh province followed suit with 220 million VND from its budget.-Enditem
