Turkish President Gul urges regional leaders to clean up their own home before people took to streets to protest
TEHRAN (A.A) - 15.02.2011 - Turkish President on Monday gathered with Turkish journalists as part of his visit to Tehran, where he met with his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Gul said his talks in Iran addressed recent regional issues, saying he had urged leaders of the regional countries "to clean up your own home" long before people took to streets in mass protests.
"Times are changing. You may shutdown cell phone networks but TV stations are showing anything that is going on. Nothing should be done against the people," Gul said.
Gul said injustice, corruption and unaccountability were the biggest problems in totalitarian regimes, adding that the regional countries saw violent political upheavals due to the lack of strict inspection mechanisms.
Gul said that his talks in Iran also covered economic relations, and that UN sanctions on Iran did not prevent the two countries from boosting trade volume to 30 billion USD, adding a Turkish official would stay in Iran to discuss a free trade agreement.
"Iran has an over-protectionist economic policy. This is an embargo from within the country itself. You are weakening your economy with your own hands," Gul said.
