Junta allows Suu Kyi to meet with lawyer again
YANGON, Aug. 17 Kyodo - Myanmar's detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi was allowed Sunday to meet with her lawyer for the second time in 10 days, according to diplomatic sources.
The meeting between Suu Kyi and her lawyer, Kyi Win, at her Yangon house lastedover four hours, diplomats in Yangon said.
It was not immediately known what they discussed.
Suu Kyi and Kyi Win met on Aug. 8 for about two hours also at her residence.
At their meeting on Aug. 8, the first such meeting since 2003, Suu Kyi had asked Kyi Win about legal procedures relating to her extended house arrest, according to a spokesman of her National League for Democracy.
In May, the junta extended Suu Kyi's house arrest for another year, bringingher into a sixth consecutive year of detention. She was arrested in May 2003.
The NLD appealed the move on grounds that the government can only place restrictions on her for five consecutive years under the relevant section of the law originally used to detain her, which deals with safeguarding the statefrom those desiring to engage in subversive acts.
The junta, however, rejected the party's appeal.
It later published a commentary in state-run newspapers, saying it is necessary to continue her detention to safeguard national sovereignty and that the extension of her house arrest was made ''in conformity with the law.'' Sunday's meeting took place a day ahead of the scheduled visit of U.N. special envoy to Myanmar Ibrahim Gambari, who will be visiting to promote nationalreconciliation and democratic reforms in the military-ruled country.
This will be Gambari's fourth visit since the junta's brutal crackdown onpro-democracy protesters in September last year, which sparked a global outcry.
Gambari is expected to meet with Suu Kyi during his visit, as he was allowed toin his previous missions, the diplomats said.
Suu Kyi has been detained for more than 12 of the past 18 years.
The NLD won the 1990 general election by a landslide but the junta refused tohonor the results.
