Vietnam police arrest captain of cruiser sunken with 2 Russian tourists.
HANOI, February 21 (Itar-Tass) -- The Vietnamese police arrested the captain and a mechanic of a cruiser, which sank with 11 foreign tourists and their local guide in the Ha Long Bay in the northern Vietnamese province Quang Ninh. The arrested sailors were charged with negligence that entailed grave consequences, the local press reported on Monday.
The law enforcement agencies interrogated earlier another four crewmen from the Chuong Hai 06 cruiser, which sank with 21 tourists, including two Russian women onboard, on February 17. The investigation committee is examining closely the cruiser, which was lifted from the sea bottom two days after the tragedy. The detectives proved the initial theory that the cruiser sank due to a crack in the bottom of the engine room.
The tragedy occurred early in the morning during the night anchorage off the Titov Island. Most tourists were sleeping in their cabins and could not get out from there. Two Russian women from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Yelena and Anastasia Voropinovs, two U.S. women, a Briton, a Japanese, a Frenchwoman, two Swedish women, a Swiss citizen and an Australian citizen born in Vietnam are among foreign citizens, who sank onboard the cruiser.
The Ha Long Bay, which consists of more than 3,000 islets, is
considered one of the most beautiful nature pearls and one of the major tourist attractions in Vietnam. The Ha Long Bay was put on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1994. About three million Vietnamese and foreign tourists visit this archipelago every year.
