Turkey's Chief EU negotiator Bagis recieves USCIRF members
ANKARA (A.A) - 23.02.2011 - Turkish State Minister & Chief Negotiator for EU talks Egemen Bagis on Wednesday received members of the United States Commission for International Religious Freedom (USCIRF).
Speaking at the meeting, Bagis said Turkey recorded significant progress on religious freedoms and inter-religious dialogue, and referred to the religious ceremonies held in historical Sumela Monastery and Akdamar Church last year.
Bagis said the religious ceremonies showed that Turkey was a part of the European Union (EU) and got closer to EU standards.
Leonard A. Leo, the chairman of USCIRF, underlined importance of freedom of expression and religious freedoms to stability and security in Asia and the Mediterranean.
Felice Baran, Imam Talal Yusuf Eid, Elizabeth Prodromou, William Shaw and Nina Shea, the commission members, attended the meeting.
