EAD signs MoU with Dubai Municipality on Air Quality Monitoring
Abu Dhabi, Feb 28, 2011 (WAM) - The Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) and Dubai Municipality have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to facilitate the exchange of air quality data and help both organisations achieve common goals in the field of air quality monitoring. It will also help to provide in-depth information on air quality pollution.
Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, Secretary General of the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) and Eng. Salem Bin Mesmar, Assistant Director General of Dubai Municipality for Health, Safety and Environment Monitoring Sector signed the MoU at EAD headquarters.
"EAD is the environmental authority in Abu Dhabi responsible for managing and monitoring air quality. We developed a strategy to control and improve the quality of ambient air in the Emirate," said Al Mubarak.
She said "An emirate-wide Air Quality Management Study was developed in 2002 to determine the impact of current and future development activities. As a part of this study, EAD established an ambient air quality network that became operational in 2007".
Al Mubarak said that the network consists of 10 fixed and 2 mobile stations. We have five in Abu Dhabi city, three in the Western region, two in Al Ain city and two mobile stations. The stations collect readings on concentrations of SO2, NOx, O3, H2S, CO, PM10, CH4, BTEX, noise, wind speed, wind direction, and ambient temperature from urban, roadside, industrial, and regional stations".
"They are currently being retrofitted to also measure the concentration of PM2.5, in support of the current National Environmental Health Strategy being developed" she added.
"The air quality network feeds data to a central database hosted by EAD and this database is equipped with modelling software and emission inventory setup to enable round the clock monitoring of pollution levels" Al Mubarak noted.
She added "Through this MoU, we will work closely with Dubai Municipality to achieve our common goals in the field of air quality monitoring. We will establish a link for an online exchange of air quality data between the two emirates. This would allow us to benefit from the ‘full picture' when it comes to this environmental issue".
Eng. Salem Bin Mesmar, Assistant Director General of Dubai Municipality for Health, Safety and Environment Monitoring Sector said "We have been monitoring Dubai's air quality since 1988, in order to provide the basic data necessary for air quality control programmes. In 1993, we set up a new air monitoring network to be the first of its kind in the region. Today, we have additional air analysers in place to determine the public's exposure to air pollution." Eng. Mesmar added that Dubai Municipality is currently expanding its air quality monitoring network in Dubai by adding 14 fixed stations and one mobile station. These stations are expected to monitor different types of air pollutants. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
