The court, after going through the report of the
agency, expressed satisfaction over the progress in the
investigation of 2G spectrum allocation scam which according
to CAG caused a loss of Rs 1.74 lakh crore to the public
exchequer.
The bench also granted ten days time to the Centre for
setting up of special court which would exclusively conduct
the trial proceeding in the multi-crore scam after the
government said it is in favour of such a move and that the
Law Minister has asked the Delhi High Court to take a decision
in this regard.
"The matter is under consideration before the Chief
Justice of Delhi High Court as the Law Minister had written a
letter to him on February 11 regarding this," Additional
Solicitor General Indira Jaising told the bench.
The bench asked the CBI and the Enforcement
Directorate to place before it their reports about the
investigation by March 10 and posted the matter for further
hearing on March 15.
Senior advocate Harish Salve, who appears for Tata and
was waiting for another case in the 2G scam relating to
cancellation of license, stood up in the middle of the
proceedings and submitted that the court should conduct
in-camera proceedings.
"These(companies) are the large corporations and it
affects their reputation. What CBI finds out in its probe
would be revealed only when chargesheet is filed. But so many
things have come up in the media," Salve said adding that
media should be restrained from publishing documents filed in
the court.
The bench, however, rejected his plea saying that
"open media and open trial are important and we don't want to
dilute it".
