Symposium on general election held in Vientiane
VIENTIANE,MAR,01 (KPL) - The National Election Committee on Monday organised a symposium at the National Assembly’s hall on general elections.
Chaired by National Election Committee President Mr Bounnhang Vorachit, the one-day function was attended by NA President, Vice President and a number of relevant officials.
During the meeting, committee member Dr Saysomphone Phomvihane highlighted the achievements of election preparations over the past few months, along with plans for the coming weeks.
So far, various sub-committees related to the election have been established and their role and functions determined by the committee.
Equipment needed for the election has been prepared and sent to relevant areas.
Training for officials at the central level has been completed and is now underway for villagers to ensure they understand the importance of the election and that they cast their ballot to elect their representatives to the National Assembly.
Rules regarding the election campaign and casting of ballots are being drafted and election candidates are being selected.
Authorities in Vientiane and the provinces are collecting information on eligible voters and informing them about the election date.
The election committee is committed to ensuring security during the election to ensure that everyone eligible can vote.
The committee has vowed to use government budget allocated for the election transparently and economically and has urged all sub-committees to monitor their work so that preparations are completed timely with the schedule.
The National Assembly plays an important role in decision making on fundamental issues as well as overseeing the performance of the executive organ, the prosecutor’s office and the people’s court.
A general election is held every five years. This year, the election committee will elect 132 members from almost 200 candidates to the Seventh Legislature of the National Assembly. In basic terms, each National Assembly member represents 50,000 people.
Under the Election Law, all Lao citizens, irrespective of their gender, ethnicity, beliefs, social status and profession, who are over 18 years old, have the right to vote; and anyone who is at least 21 years of age has the right to be elected as a member of the National Assembly.
The election of members to the Sixth Legislature took place in 2006 when 115 were voted in.
