French automotive firm's executive says the company to continue investing in Turkey

GENEVA (A.A) - 02.03.2011 - The head of Renault Euromed Region Management Committee said on Tuesday that Renault would continue to invest in Turkey.
Jacques Chauvet said that Renault was manufacturing its Clio 4 model not only in its factory in France (Flins) but also in the northwestern Turkish province of Bursa.
"Our investments in Turkey will be more in 2012," Chauvet told reporters during the Geneva Automotive Fair.
Chauvet said Renault was also planning to manufacture Fluence's sportive version in Turkey, and Turkish automotive market would continue to be a good market.
"I guess the automotive market will be around 850-900 thousand this year, but we may see a 1 million market this year if Turkey reduced special consumption tax a bit," Chauvet said.
Chauvet said electric cars could be used in Turkey if taxes were cut down and necessary infrastructure was laid, and Oyak Renault could manufacture 30,000 electric cars in its factory in Turkey.
The executive said Renault would push four electric car models to market in 2011-2012 period.
Moreover, Chavet said Oyak Renault factory in Bursa produced 307,000 vehicles in 2010 and broke a record, and the factory would surpass this record in 2011.
Chauvet said Nissan was still carrying out feasibility studies to invest in Turkey, and enumerated Turkey, Romania, Morocco and Algeria as key countries for Renault.
Renault has been present in Turkey for four decades through its subsidiary Oyak-Renault. Its three-box models such as Symbol and Megane Sedan, are particularly popular with Turkish customers.
For Renault, Turkey is not only a key local market but also a base for exports to the Mediterranean, Eastern Europe, Russia and North Africa.
Oyak-Renault has a high-performance production site at Bursa. The plant assembles many different vehicles (Clio Estate, Megane II, Symbol / Thalia and since 2009, Fluence). It also produces powertrain components (engines, gearboxes, front and rear axles).
The Bursa site is an integrated industrial platform with one of the highest quality scores in the Renault group. In the future, the site is expected to increase output still further, from 43 to 60 vehicles/hour.
According to 2009 figures, Renault Group has 51 percent and 49 percent share in the industrial subsidiary Oyak Renault and commercial subsidiary Renault Mais respectively. Renault employs some 6,684 people, which is equal to 5.5% of the Group total. Renault factory in Turkey produces 277,572 vehicles, equal to 12.2% of the Group total and 14.8% share of the Turkish market.
