SARAWAK WILL NOT COMPROMISE ON EXTREMIST VIEWS
KUCHING (Sarawak, Malaysia), March 2 (Bernama) -- The East Malaysia state of Sarawak government will not compromise on any extremist views being taken by the media that may create racial tension, especially among the state's 27 different ethnic communities, Deputy ChiefMinister Dr George Chan said Wednesday.
He said Sarawak was unique because it celebrated the diversity of its multi-etnic population and upheld a harmonious co-existence that had been acknowleged as a model for the 1Malaysia spirit.
"Anything else you (media) can write but it is very important that nobody should try to break the existing racial harmony, which is of paramount importance as far as the state and state leaders are concerned," he said when launching the Sarawak Unity Foundation logo design competition themed "Sarawak Youth for Unity 2011" here.
He said Sarawakians were known for their respect and appreciation for each other's faith, cultures and traditions.
On the competition, whose closing date is May 31 this year, Chan said all Sarawakians aged 16-25 are invited to take part as it would give them the opportunity to apply their artistic and creative talents to interprete the meaning and significance of unity.
