US MUST GET APPROVAL OF WORLD COMMUNITY BEFORE ANY ACTION ON LIBYA, SAYS DR MAHATHIR
SHAH ALAM (Selangor, Malaysia), March 2 (Bernama) -- Former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Wednesday that the US must get approval of the international community before taking any military action against Libya.
Although he himself did not like what was happening in Libya, he believed that any action taken must be through the proper channels.
"I hope the US does not take unilateral action solely in its own interest because whatever we do requires the agreement of the international community," he told reporters after visiting Al-Madinah University here.
"If they can invade Libya, they can also invade us when they don't like us," he said, commenting on reports of US intention to take military action against strife-torn Libya.
US warships and planes are reported to be nearing Libya possibly in preparation for an invasion.
Dr Mahathir also said that Muslims must equip themselves with knowledge, especially in science, technology and mathematics, to strengthen their position in the world.
Without such knowledge, Muslims would be weak and easily pressured, he said.
"When we are weak we don't know how to defend ourselves. If we are not weak and are as strong as our enemies we need not resort to what is considered as terrorism," Dr Mahathir said.
