Best Buddies Opens New Premises, Shares Future Plans

Doha, March 02 (QNA) - Best Buddies Qatar on Wednesday launched its new premises by announcing its future plans targetting people with special needs.
Best Buddies is an international non-profit organization dedicated to creating a global volunteer movement which aims to create one-on-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership abilities of people with disabilities. It was founded in Qatar in 2008 with the partnership of Shafallah Center for Children with Special Needs with a view to pursuing those goals.
Executive Director of Best Buddies Qatar Laala Abo Alfain said in a press conference held here today that the center will host a number of projects and programs which target improving the services provided to children with special needs. The projects will take place in the next few months and target the short-term, medium-term and the long-term.
She added that the center is working round the clock with a team of experts to set the broadlines of the center's strategic plan. Abo Alfain further said that the center is considering having an afternoon period for its members, she added that the center will approve the plan if more than 25 members sign-up for the afternoon period.
Abo Alfain discussed her initiative "Pen Pal", which aims to create pen friends of Primary school students and children with special needs, and said that the program can promote awareness regarding the rights of children with special needs. She said that the program can help free children with special needs of their social isolation.
Abo Alfain also discussed a training program that targets improving the individual's attitude towards children with special needs. The program, as a first step , will target workers at the center , parents of children with special needs and employees of the country's institutions. She also added that the center will offer courses that uses music, drawing and other art forms as cure
She said that the center is very interested in supporting the employment of people with special needs, pointing out that the center is working on a detailed plan to achieve that. The plan aims to consider skills demanded in the local market and then the center will make a detailed study of the abilities of members in the center. Abo Alfain added that the center wants its members to realize their dreams of becoming productive members of their community.
The executive director paid tribute to Nasser Bin Abdullah and Sons which has donated QR 2.2 million that will go into financing the center's programs.
Regarding the number of members in the center , Abo Alfain said that there are 552 people spread across different age levels. The director added that there are a further 75 people on the waiting list. Abo Alfain announced during the press conference that 18 of the 75 on the waiting list, have been contacted, and will be examined by a specialist before they join the center's programs.
There are 23 employees in Best Buddies Qatar who work on the center's various projects.
