Ashton to visit Moldova to study its political situation
CHISINAU, March 3 (Itar-Tass) -- EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Catherine Ashton will make a brief trip to Moldova on Thursday, March 3, in order to discuss its integration with the European Union and ways to overcome the crisis in the country.
Ashton will meet with acting President and Parliament Speaker Marian Lupu and Prime Minister Vlad Filat, the government press service said.
The high degree of political tensions in Moldova is borne out by the fact that local press report ahead of Ashton's visit claimed that a trip to Moldova was not on her schedule and that she would be in Bratislava on Wednesday, Match 2, to attend an international security conference.
However the Moldovan government told the press that Ashton would come to Chisinau for several hours and hold a joint press conference with Filat and a meeting with Lupu.
