Turkish Foreign Ministry official on a possible operation by NATO to Libya
WASHINGTON, D.C. (A.A) - 03.03.2011 - An official from the Turkish Foreign Ministry said that a possible operation by NATO to Libya could cause an adverse effect.
Foreign Ministry Deputy Undersecretary Selim Yenel delivered a speech at a panel discussion organized by the German Marshall Fund of the United States in Washington, D.C.
In regard to the recent developments that occurred in the Mideast countries, Yenel said that he did not want to use the word "model" for Turkey. "We believe that we can help those countries. But becoming a model for them is different," he said. Yenel said that Turkey was a secular country, stating that many countries in the region were governed according to the Islamic laws.
Yenel said that Turkey had a close consultation with the United States regarding Libya.
Any possible operation by NATO to Libya could cause an adverse effect, he said. "We should act carefully on the matter," he said.
Yenel said that the U.S. administration understood Turkey's stance on issues such as Israel and Iran.
"Earlier some misunderstandings happened on some matters between Turkey and the United States. But later these issues were solved. The two countries will have brighter days. Now we are talking more and listening each other," he said.
