Shiites demand work, equality in Saudi Arabia
KUWAIT CITY, March 4 (Itar-Tass) -- Shiites demonstrated in two towns in the oil-producing east of Saudi Arabia on Thursday demanding to free their relatives from jails and provide employment and equality.
Close to a hundred protesters demonstrated in Qatif and Awwamiya, Arab TV channels reported.
"We want the prisoners free but we also have other demands," a
protester in Qatif was quoted as saying. "We want work and equality."
The protesters did not demand any change of the ruling regime.
Security forces blocked the main road in Qatif, but did not interfere.
Last week Saudi King Abdullah promised before his return home after three-month medical treatment abroad to earmark 37 billion dollars for social needs. The funds will be used to improve living conditions, create new jobs, adjust allowances to inflation, and train Saudi nationals abroad.
