M'SIAN CYCLIST AZIZULHASNI A REAL ICONIC FIGURE : PM NAJIB

From Leslean Arshad

MELBOURNE, March 4 (Bernama) -- Najib Razak on Friday described Malaysian track cycling ace Azizulhasni Awang, who defied all odds to get to the podium despite the agony of injury at the Track World Cup Cycling Championship in Manchester last month, as a real iconic figure.
"You have made us proud. You have showed what courage is.
"You are a real iconic figure who doesn't know the meaning of giving up," the Prime Minister said at a luncheon gathering with the Malaysian community, comprising mostly students, and which was also attended by Azizulhasni at Melbourne University, here.
Najib later presented Malaysia's National Sports Council (MSN) A$10,000 contribution to Azizulhasni at the event.
Najib also described the Azizulhasni episode as a wonderful story.
"In life you must not have the word 'giving up'.
"You face obstacles, you overcome obstacles. You face challenges, you endure the pain and if you endure the pain, you will gain," he said.
Azizulhasni was blazing towards the final bend of a world title race when four of the six riders crashed in a scene of carnage behind Sir Chris Hoy, the eventual winner, from England.
The 23-year-old Malaysian's calf was skewered by a 20cm shard of Siberian pine from the track, but he recovered to remount his bike and take third place, behind Sir Chris and Jason Niblett in the men's Keirin final.
Najib said Azizulhasni was also a symbol in Malaysia-Australia relations as mentioned by Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard that "Azizulhasni is Malaysia's world-class rider under Australia's tutelage".
While wishing all the best to Azizulhasni, Najib said Malaysia would want the cyclist to make the country proud by winning gold.
Azizulhasni is touted as Malaysia's best hope of winning a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics.
