President announces candidacy quotas for April’s election

VIENTIANE,MAR 03.(KPL) -President of the Lao PDR Choummaly Sayasone endorsed a decree on the number of candidates for the general election to the National Assembly to be held on April 30.
Vientiane Capital has 21 candidates, 15 of whom will be elected as representatives of the people in the National Assembly, according to the Presidential Decree No 021.
Savannakhet will have 25 candidates, 17 of whom will be chosen.
Meanwhile, Champassak and Luang Prabang will have 17 and 13 candidates vying in the election, respectively. This year’s general election will decide the first 12 winners in Champassak and the first nine in Luang Prabang.
The following are numbers of candidates and deputies for the election to the National Assembly of Laos (the first one is the number of candidates and the second one is the number of representatives to be selected):
Phongsaly: 7-5, Luang Namtha: 7-5, Oudomsay: 9-6, Bokeo: 7-5, Sayaboury: 10-7, Houaphanh: 9-6, Xiengkhuang 9-6, Vientiane (province): 13 -9, Borikhamsay: 9-6, Khammouane: 10-7, Sekong: 7-5, Attapeu: 7-5 and Saravane: 10-7.
General elections are held in accordance with the constitution of the Lao PDR and Election Law of the National Assembly.
The coming general election is to elect 132 out of 190 candidates to serve as people’s representatives in the National Assembly.
The general elections are held every five years.
The last elections were held in 2006 which saw 175 candidates vying for 115 seats in the National Assembly.
